At Memorial Hospital’s Annual Winter Party held January 20th Kari Schaefer was presented with the 2016 Isreal D. Newmark Memorial Service Award. The Newmark award is presented each year to an individual who has contributed most, either directly or indirectly to the quality care at Memorial Hospital. A committee of peers selected Kari Schaefer as the 2016 recipient.
Dr. Scott Hinze presented the award to Schaefer at the hospital Winter Party held at the American Legion hall in Steeleville. He said, “When I meet this employee in the hall she is always pleasant and has a smile on her face even on days when I know she is not feeling up to par. I think she exemplifies our hospital mission with her commitment to professional excellence in providing quality health care, compassion, and service to patients, the community and others. This employee is a great example of what we all should emulate as humans. She leads more fundraisers for others than anyone I know, raising money for those in need. She always has great ideas for ways to do something that will benefit one employee or another without regard for herself.”
Schaefer began working at Memorial Hospital in September of 2002. She worked in E.R, and as a floor nurse. She then worked primarily in E.R. before transitioning to her current role as Discharge Planner. When asked what she likes most about her job she replied, “Getting to see everyone and helping others out making them feel good and safe.” Schaefer was very overwhelmed and very honored to receive the award. She said, “I was totally surprised when Dr. Hinze gave the description. We are a team and we pull together when someone is in need of help or support. I just want to thank everyone for nominating me and also all the help and support you have given through the years.”
Schaefer resides in Red Bud with her husband, Ray.
