About Memorial's Medical Exploring Program

The Memorial Hospital Organization, MH, is a registered Medical Explorers Post 8618. The program is for high school and college students who are interested in Healthcare Careers. Whether you already know what occupation you would like to pursue or you have not decided on a specific career field yet, through Medical Explorers you will have opportunities to learn about many careers, participate in hands-on activities and meet healthcare professionals.

The MH Medical Explorers program is a 9-month program with one group meeting/event held the third Thursday of each month, October through May. Post events will be held in the training room of Memorial Hospital unless otherwise indicated.

Students interested in the program are invited to attend an Open House in September (date TBA) from 6:00-8:00pm in the Main Entrance lobby.

Student Participation
  • There will be a limited number of students accepted.

  • Applicants will be notified of acceptance no later than September 12th.

  • Students are required to attend 75% of the Post meetings/events.

  • Students are required to complete 4 hours of volunteer time during the program duration.

  • Students are encouraged to participate in Memorial Hospital community events including: Health Fairs, Youth Education Events, Blood Drives, and Parades.

  • At the end of the student's program, the student will write a 1-3 paragraph reflection of their time, interactions, new knowledge and inspirations toward a career or college path. This reflection may be used as a quote for our future programs. Students will have all observations and reflection paper completed by May 31st.

 
Medical Explorers Program Outline
  • Presentations and Hands-On Demonstrations from the following departments:

    • Pharmacy

    • Nursing

    • Operating Room Nursing

    • Laboratory

    • Cardio Pulmonary

    • Diagnostic Imaging

    • Specialty Providers

    • Therapy and Sports Rehab

    • Rural Health Clinics

  • Activities may include:

    • IV prep and starting of IVs

    • Sutures

    • Blood Draw

    • Surgery Observation

    • Lab Cultures

    • Ultra Sounds

    • CPR Training

    • Hospital Support Staff

    • Tour of Ambulance Base

    • Visit with Air Ambulance Transport

 
Qualifications
  • Must be 14-21 Years of Age

  • GPA at least 3.0

  • Student Application Form (Memorial Hospital and Boy Scouts of America forms)

  • Program Guide Signature Form

  • Social Media Release Form
