About Memorial Hospital

Memorial Hospital in Chester, IL is a 25-bed, Critical Access Hospital with two Rural Health Clinic locations. Serving our community since 1962, Memorial is a Joint Commission Gold Seal Accredited facility with a variety of outpatient services including same day surgery, emergency services, state of the art diagnostic imaging, full service laboratory, multi-specialty consulting clinics with providers from the St. Louis and Southern Illinois region, and an off-site therapy and sports rehabilitation facility.

Chester is a rural community located on the banks of the Mississippi River and has the only bridge connecting Illinois to Missouri between St. Louis and Cape Girardeau which, carries approximately 7,000 Midwest travelers per day. Plans for a new bridge are set to begin in the summer of 2022 with expected completion in the fall 2025. The riverfront is a favorite spot of many to watch the world slow down and enjoy a glorious sunset as the barges and trains roll by.

The entrepreneurial spirit thrives in our Southern Illinois region, which abounds with family owned eateries, shops, coffee houses, bakeries, wineries, and micro-breweries. Rozier’s Country Market, the local grocery store, provides fresh, quality cut meats and produce along with a wide selection of homemade bake goods and groceries. Most businesses are family owned and you feel like family when you enter their doors.

Seated at the northern tip of the Shawnee National Forest, which contains trails for the avid outdoorsman, and only a couple miles from the Randolph County Recreation Area, Chester provides no shortage of hiking trails, camping excursions, lakes, horse trails, and outdoor recreational activities for people of all ages. In city limits, you will find a 3,800 foot paved walking path at the Cohen Complex. The complex features two baseball diamonds, three softball fields, tennis & pickle ball courts, workout stations, a soccer field, shelter houses and playground. Or locate the new Disc Golf course at Cole Park, which includes challenging hills and natural landscape along with shelter houses and a large playground for kids.

There are three elementary schools in Chester: Chester Elementary School (public), St. John Evangelical School (Lutheran), and St. Mary’s Catholic School. Chester High School offers many athletic opportunities and has a renowned music program, and over 12 additional extracurricular clubs. Chester residents also have the opportunity to attend the following private high schools in the area: Christ Our Savior Lutheran High School (Evansville, IL), St. Vincent High School (Perryville, MO), Valle Catholic School (Ste. Genevieve, MO), and Gibault High School (Waterloo, IL).

Chester’s location makes just about anywhere a quick 30-60 minute drive with scenic, low traffic views in-between. St. Louis, MO (60 Minutes), Cape Girardeau, MO (60 minutes) home of Southeast Missouri State University, Carbondale, IL (45 Minutes) home of Southern Illinois University, Ste. Genevieve, MO (30 minutes) historical downtown with boutiques and antique shopping, DuQuoin, IL (45 minutes) home of the DuQuoin State Fair, and many more locations with hidden dinning and shopping treasures.
