Lead Testing for Children

Chester Clinic & Steeleville Family Practice

Service Description

As of July 1, 2026, Illinois now requires Lead Level testing at 12 months and 24 months. Lead is common in older homes, soil, water, and some consumer products, making exposure a risk for all children. Why is lead testing necessary? There is no safe level of lead in the body. Even small amounts of lead can harm the body and brain development. Testing allows for early detection and intervention for lead exposure. Most children don't look or act sick. A blood test is the only way to know if they have been exposed. Children exposed to lead can experience life long complications that can affect their ability to think, learn, and behave. They can also experience short and long-term health problems. When to have testing? Your child should be tested at 12 months and 24 months of age. This testing can be completed during your child's routine well baby visit at this ages. Where to get tested? Lead testing is available by appointment at Memorial Hospital's Rural Health Clinics. Testing at these locations is done through a blood draw. The Randolph County Health Department offers finger prick testing by appointment in Chester on Wednesdays and in Sparta on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. If you have questions about lead exposure, talk to your physician. Same Day Appointments are available by calling one of our clinic locations and scheduling an appointment with one of our primary care providers, nurse practitioner, or physician assistants.
